"Hexagons" is a multiplayer strategy game inspired by "HEX BOIS" a game developed and maintained by a solo developer who goes by the name "Stan". I found the original game in 2022 and was addicted to its simple design and easy to learn mechanics. At this point, the game was completely different lacking many modern features and mechanics. Attack tiles did not move and combat essentially boiled down to who could click the fastest. There was no xp or upgrading tile system and the way you increased the amount that generators gave was by placing down cores. I even joined the discord to suggest adding a "money per second" counter which I was super excited about when he took my suggestion. From there Stan added upgrades, a lobby system, destroying tiles, and several other features to get the game where it is today. I had a hard time getting my friends to play with me at this time, because it was so simple and they did not understand the appeal of the game. I ended up taking a long break from playing and when I returned, the game was in a very similar state to what you see on this website. In 2026 I finally convinced 2 of my friends (from a different friend group) to play with me and we had lots of fun. There was a bug relating to attack tile targeting that I suggested to fix by making them target the closest enemy tile, rather than prioritizing walls as this led to large amounts of attack tiles causing the map to freeze as they could not see any walls and were actively trying to avoid fighting other attack tiles. Shortly after I suggested this, Stan updated the game. However, he actually changed the way the combat worked altogether. Attack tiles no longer moved and would only be able to attack what was directly next to them, the more tiles that are next to the one your attacking, the faster you can attack it which was more similar to how the game played when I first found it. However, this change made the game much slower for my friends and me, and in return, less fun, which ended up inspiring me to make my own version of the game, featuring the style of attacking where the attack hex's move toward the nearest enemy hex. I hope you check out the original game to see the difference between the two styles of combat and come to your own conclusion on which one you like better.
I would also like to add that I don't know the first thing about coding, game dev, or anything like that. I was able to use AI agents through Cursor's IDE and Chatgpt to write 99% of the code. I actually learned a lot through this process and love how the game turned out. My career has nothing to do with coding though so I probably will not be making any more games. Basically, I want no credit for making this game I just wanted my friends and I to be able to play the version of the game we had the most fun with, without bothering Stan and telling him we did not like the update he made to his own game.
You can play the original game here, and I urge you to do so and to join Stans discord to let him know how much you enjoy his game.
